The sentencing of Nkosiyabo Ngubane, who killed ANC councillor Wiseman Zithulele Mshibe, to life by the High Court in Durban was a "major victory", the party said.

"The sentence is a major victory against counter-revolutionary forces who want to reverse our democratic breakthrough by sabotaging and assassinating our leaders and prominent comrades for their myopic gains," said ANC Ethekwini spokesman Bheki Ntshangase.

Ngubane, 40, was sentenced to life earlier this week by Acting Judge Thomas Ncube for the planning and killing of Mshibe.

Mshibe was shot in March 2011 as he entered the yard of his Yellowood Park home in Durban.

He drove away and sought help from a passing motorist, but died later in hospital.

"We agree with the sentiment echoed by the judge on this matter that those who carry out political murders should be severely punished."
