The Special Investigating Unit will probe the validity of a tender awarded by the department of communications, the presidency said on Tuesday.

"President Jacob Zuma has signed a proclamation authorising the SIU to investigate certain matters relating to the affairs of the department of communications," spokesman Mac Maharaj said.

He said the unit would investigate the validity of a memorandum of agreement concluded between the department and Media Corner (Pty) Limited.

The company provided services for a public awareness campaign about digital migration.

The unit would investigate allegations of improper or unlawful conduct by employees of the department in as far as it relates to the awarding of the tender to Media Corner.

"The SIU will further investigate the roles played by the employees of the department in as far as it relates awarding of the tender to Media Corner," said Maharaj.
