The National Prosecuting Authority on Sunday denied a report that a decision on whether its deputy head Nomgcobo Jiba should be prosecuted was imminent.
"That is false," spokesman Nathi Mncube said in an sms.
"The police will have to finalise investigations and submit the dockets for decision. The dockets have not been submitted to us for a decision."
An unnamed senior police official told City Press a decision could be made in the next couple of weeks.
According to the report Hawks investigators had started interviewing potential witnesses as they probed misconduct allegations against Jiba.
In August, criminal charges were laid against three senior NPA officials, including Jiba.
Jiba, specialised commercial crime unit head Lawrence Mrwebi, and director of public prosecutions for north Gauteng, Sibongile Mzinyathi, face charges of perjury.
The charges followed court findings about the NPA's leadership last year.
This was after rights group Freedom Under Law successfully applied to overturn the dropping of criminal charges against police crime intelligence unit head Richard Mdluli.
The unnamed police official told City Press: "They carried out the interviews as part of the compilation of a docket against her [Jiba]. There was an indication that there would be a decision on whether to prosecute her in the next couple of weeks."
Mncube on Sunday referred questions to the police.
"The NPA will not be privy to who the police meet or conduct interviews with as they carry on with their investigative duties," he said.
Police spokesman Lt-Gen Solomon Makgale could not immediately comment on the matter.
