The truth surrounding former national police commissioner Jackie Selebi's fall from grace was still to be heard, deputy justice minister Thabang Makwetla said in Durban on Thursday.

Makwetla, who was addressing a memorial service for Selebi in the Durban city hall, said he did not believe all had been told in the corruption conviction that led to Selebi's demise.

"I do not believe the full story of what happened. The truth of what happened when Jackie was on his last assignment will come out," he said.

Makwetla was addressing about 1000 people gathered on Thursday evening to pay tribute to Jackie Selebi.

The memorial service, organised by the African National Congress Youth League, was to be addressed by Water Affairs and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane.

Selebi, who was convicted of corruption in 2010, died last Friday.

Makwetla said Selebi had fought for South Africa in the fight against apartheid.
