As government raises revenue through increased levies and taxes, it should clamp down on corruption, National Freedom Party secretary general Nhlanhla Khubisa said on Thursday.

"We can raise a lot of money... but a lot goes to corruption too. The proposals are welcome, but we need to clamp down on corruption and ensure we have skilled personnel who can efficiently do their work," Khubisa said.

In his budget speech, Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene announced some personal income tax increases, a hike in the general fuel levy, in the Road Accident Fund and electricity levies, and increased excise duties.

Khubisa said more money should have been allocated to upgrading the living conditions of mineworkers and of people around mines.

"We could have given more money to municipalities in the light of apathy and despair that gives rise to service delivery protests."

The party welcomed the increase in old age pensions and child grants.
