The Economic Freedom Fighters have confirmed that a person has died during an attempted land invasion in Ballito.

According to EWN residents were marking out plots and waiting in line to collect forms from EFF members when police moved in and dispersed the crowd.

EFF's Jackie Shandu said that a woman ran into the free-way in order to escape the police, which resulted in her being run over and killed by a car.

The North Coast Courier reports that the EFF were stoning cars on the N2 when it happened.

“We had received an alert that the group were stoning cars on the N2 and were on our way there when the accident happened,” said Umhlali SAPS’s Captain Maharaj.

Apparently the EFF leaders quickly vanished after the accident, and were nowhere to be seen when ambulances arrived.

The driver escaped uninjured.

The land invasion started on Sunday, when a shack popped up overnight on Green Fields farm, next to the N2.

The 'unoccupied' land actually belongs to a consortium and has been earmarked for residential and commercial development.

News 24 claims that the EFF was offering the plots of land in exchange for joining the party.

According to that report, following the police leaving the scene the EFF returned, handing out membership forms.

The crowd were then led onto the land to secure plots for themselves.

When [Jan] Van Riebeeck came here he took the land from the people and we are just taking it back. We are not hurting anyone and not stealing anything because this land is lying unused. So what we will do is take the land and build our shacks because the people can’t breathe where they are living now,” EFF leader Lindani Mthembu said.

When asked about the membership forms, he said "The people have realised that the EFF is a party that will act for them. They have realised that we are doing this for the community because they were living like pigs.”
