Russia doesn't have SA nuclear deal worth billions in bag

The government says it has yet to make a decision on who will be building nuclear power plants worth between R400 billion and R1-trillion in South Africa, according to a report.

The Department of Energy dismissed claims, that Russia had been selected to build the plants, The Sunday Independent newspaper reported.

According to the newspapers no decision had been made on a preferred partner.

France, South Korea, China and the US along with Russia are all in the running to build the  nuclear power plants. The Sunday Independent reported that the co-operation agreements by Russia was far more detailed that those of the other countries.

A Department of Energy official told the newspaper that the suggestions that Russians had the deal to build the plants was false.

According to the official the bidding process has not even started and the government would from next month start the tender process and preferred bidder or bidders would be announced by the end of the year.

The intention is to build six to eight reactors in the country.
