Zuma’s new mining minister has teaching background

President Jacob Zuma surprised South Africa by replacing Ngoako Ramathlodi as mining minister with the relatively unknown Mosebenzi Zwane. A sketchy‚ out-of-date profile on an out-of-date Free State website gives some sketchy information.Zwane was born in Vrede in the Eastern Free State and obtained a teaching diploma from the SA Teachers College in Pretoria.He obtained a certificate in municipal development from the University of Pretoria and studied for a BComm at Unisa.He became involved in politics in the early 1980s in the Thembelihle Youth Congress and joined the African National Congress' (ANC) branch there.Zwane taught at a farm school and rose through the ranks of the ANC's Frankfort region to service on its executive in the early 1990s.He became chair of the Thabo Mofutsanyana ANC region in 2006.He served as a councillor on the Phumelela Local Municipality in 2000 and became executive mayor of the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality in 2006.He was Free State MEC for agriculture before being appointed to its economic‚ small business development‚ tourism and environmental affairs portfolio...
