Judge me by my performance: van Rooyen
New minister of co-operative governance and traditional affairs Des van Rooyen says he wants to be judged on his performance in his new portfolio. Van Rooyen‚ who was appointed finance minister on Wednesday and COGTA minister on Sunday said he did not want to “get stuck in the past” when asked to comment on the changes.He said he was “a humble servant of this glorious ANC” and would take up any position he was tasked with‚ whether it was “for two hours” or slightly longer.Van Rooyen’s first media briefing was precisely that – brief‚ with the minister making a simple statement in which he promised to focus on the pillars of the Back to Basics programme and to assist local government with service delivery.He also focused on the 43 summer season initiation deaths so far this year saying they were “totally unacceptable”.He took only a handful of questions.He said ahead of the local government elections‚ he would be “perfecting” community engagement‚ stating there was a need to restore confidence among South Africans.“I urge South Africa to judge me by my performance‚” he said.-TMG Digital/Parliamentary Bureau..
