Membership of the African National Congress in Limpopo has declined by 60% over the past three years, according to a report.

The Sunday Independent reported that the parties membership had decreased from 161 000 to 72 000 members since December 2012.

The newspaper reported that Julius Malema’s EFF appearing to gain traction on former ANC strongholds in the province.

The Sunday Independent reported that in March 2013 Limpopo’s provincial structure were dissolved by the ANC national executive committee. The according to the paper the decision was taken after the party leadership backed Kgalema Motlanthe, at the 53rd ANC national congress in Mangaung in December 2012.

But the ANC said it took the steps it did because the provinces leadership was responsible for the massive corruption that led to the provincial government not being able to meet its financial obligations.

Downward trend in the province comes at a time when many of the party’s structures appear to be in serious issues. This includes the Ethekwini Metro region, the ANC Youth and Women’s Leagues failing to hold elective conferences because of problems relating to infighting.
