Former ANC stalwart to be buried on Saturday

Former anti-apartheid activist and Umkhonto WeSizwe (MK) cadre Tatis Mmakgolane Phasha who died on October 1 will be buried on Saturday in Kwathema in the Ekurhuleni metropolitan area east of Johannesburg‚ the ANC in Gauteng has announced. Expressing its sadness on his death‚ the party said Phasha had dedicated his life to the fight against apartheid‚ going into exile in the late 70s when he joined MK.“Whilst in exile‚ Comrade Tatis spent time as an MK operative in Swaziland‚ Mozambique‚ Lusaka‚ Angola and the then Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). In 1989‚ he was arrested alongside members of his unit during an ambush in Standerton‚ Mpumalanga‚ by the then South African Defence Force and South African Police unit.“Comrade Tatis was handed down a 27-year sentence in the Mpumalanga High Court and was released after an intervention by the late former President Nelson Mandela‚” the ANC said.“On his return‚ and after a short spell as a political prisoner at the Barberton prison‚ Comrade Tatis played a crucial role in establishing ANC branches and has continued serving in the structures of the ANC in the Ekurhuleni Region. Comrade Tatis also served in the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the UMkhonto WeSizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA).“He was also the first Chairperson of the Springs Local Transitional Council and later the chairperson of the East Rand Water Treatment company (ERWAT). At the time of his passing‚ Comrade Tatis was a director of the ERWAT‚” the party added...
