ANC concerned about SA's lack of national identity

It is concerning that the country is still struggling with having a national identity that all South Africans can identify with, the ANC said on Sunday.

"We are very concerned that up to now, when we talk about social transformation, we have been talking about delivery, lifting the poorest out of their poverty but we have not been dealing with a central nexus that ties us all together," the party's social transformation sub-committee chairperson Lindiwe Sisulu told reporters during a briefing in Midrand.

Sisulu was providing reporters feedback on the results of discussions in the sub-committee's commissions being held at the party's National General Council.

"Where are we now in creating a common identity as South Africans. Is there a South African identity that we all subscribe to, that we all hold dear, that we would all give up our lives to defend?," she aksed.

"If we don't have that, then there is something wrong with the pace that we are driving social transformation."

Something needed to be done to "close that gap".

Sisulu then asked the media whether it had any suggestions.

"I wanted to find out from the media, what would you suggest would be the way that we should go to create a truly tangible national identity for South Africans?"

She asked them to think hard about her question and consider whether they would be willing to play a role in promoting that national identity.
