DA wants human rights probe for schools where no matrics passed

Almost half of the 12 of the 22 schools that obtained a 0% pass rate are in KwaZulu-Natal‚ the Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Monday. The remainder were “six in Gauteng‚ two in the Eastern Cape and one each in the Northern Cape and Limpopo”.While the DA’s Gavin Davis said it “must be acknowledged that in some 0% schools only one or two learners wrote” the National Senior Certificate (NSC)‚ he pointed out that “in at least 14 of the 22 0% schools 10 or more learners wrote”.He singled out the Kwabhamu Secondary in KwaZulu-Natal‚ where all 37 Grade 12 learners wrote and failed the 2015 exams.“This is a shocking state of affairs whichever way you look at it. We believe that the right to a decent basic education enshrined in our Constitution is being denied to the children at these schools‚” said Davis.“The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has identified Children’s Rights and Basic Education as one of its key focus areas‚” Davis added‚ saying he ask the SAHRC “to investigate whether these schools are violating the rights of their learners to a decent education”.“No child deserves to go to a school that cannot produce a single matric pass. The performance of these schools is an affront to the dignity of every child that attends them.”The number of 0% schools in 2014 was 16 and nine in 2013...
