All necessary security measures have been put in place for this weekend's voter registration, the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure said on Friday.

"Security officials deployed for this purpose have all been briefed about their roles and responsibilities," Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said.

"The registration process will be monitored closely from both the provincial joints as well as the national joints levels and, where required, the necessary support will be provided."

Naidoo said the unit had been working closely with the Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) during the preparatory period.

Voter registration will take place on Saturday and Sunday.

Registration stations will be open from 08:00 to 17:00.

Earlier this week the IEC said at least nine million South Africans who were eligible to vote are not registered.

It hopes at least one million of them will register at the weekend to vote in this year's local government elections.

A date for the elections has not yet been announced.
