New trade union federation could be launched soon

12 April 2016 - 16:30 By Karl Gernetzky

Unions working towards the formation of a possible new labour federation that would intend to be hegemonic will hold a workers summit at the end of April‚ where it is hoped a decision will be reached to formally constitute the new formation. Workers Summit convener Zwelinzima Vavi said during a briefing in Johannesburg on Tuesday more than 40 trade unions had agreed to send 3‚000 delegates to the summit at the end of April‚ where a resolution to launch to federation and elect interim leadership may be taken.A May Day celebration would then be held to announce the federation and a campaign against job losses across sectors‚ although formal launch may take three to four months and full construction of the federation some years‚ he said.Participants were to have diverse ideological and political orientation‚ but expected to converge around the principles that united organised labour‚ including unemployment‚ poverty‚ inequality and corruption‚ he said. While there was agreement SA was facing political crises‚ there was frustration SA had been recently "preoccupied" by them and "the issues of workers have completely fallen off the agenda.""Our aim is to firmly put on the agenda the real crisis of society‚ in that we have 8.3-million unemployed‚ a 60% youth unemployment rate‚ we are the most unequal society on earth‚ and that corruption is running rampant‚" he said."We are confident that a new trade union federation can be born that is not chronically compromised by its allegiance to a discredited presidency or an anti-working class bourgeoisies parliament‚" he said.Union leaders at the briefing could not immediately provide the names of the unions expected to participate‚ but undertook to do so. The unions that however are expected send delegates include some unions still within the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu)‚ newly formed unions such as the Finance Union of Workers (Fuwo)‚ Numsa‚ the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu).Other federations and unions are participating‚ such as the National Council of Trade Unions (Nactu) and Solidarity‚ but are mulling levels of participation. Solidarity said on Tuesday its support was conditional and the union supported trade union unity‚ seeking joint campaigning on issues.Mr Vavi said on Tuesday even should a resolution be taken to formulate the federation its first congress may take place without unions sending delegations based on audited membership figures. This was not however dissimilar to Cosatu‚ whose first congress did not have a requirement of attendance based on verified membership and had taken some years establish‚ even if it grew rapidly‚ he said.TMG Digital/BDlive..
