Vusi Mabuza and his band were “speechless” when the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) wanted their song “Sishona Khona” for its 2016 municipal elections campaign. “I was speechless because we didn't know if they were going to like it‚” Mabuza said after Vuthela Production debuted the song at an IEC event in Midrand‚ Johannesburg on Monday.Mabuza‚ 37‚ approached the IEC and pitched the song to them. The IEC will make the song available for free download on social media platforms later this week.“They listened and they liked it‚” he said.“Shishona Khona” is isiZulu slang and means‚ “go out and get it”.“We are encouraging the youth to go out and register and vote. [The song] also promotes political tolerance.”Translated‚ the lyrics mean: “You don't have to tell me which political party to vote for because my vote is my choice.”Self-taught musician Mabuza and two other members of his 10-man crew‚ rapper Alpha Mahlangu and singer Emmanuel Mafilela‚ penned the lyrics. The band‚ based in Kwamhlanga in Mpumalanga‚ had only been together for four months when they cracked the IEC gig.The IEC on Monday gathered leaders from 13 political parties to sign a pledge committing to the Electoral Code of Conduct as required by law.IEC chair Glen Mashinini jived with the Vuthela Production band members during their performance at the event. – TMG Digital..
