Former Premier Senzo Mchunu may not have been present but the reasons for his resignation earlier in the day were laid out at the African National Congress office on Monday night. Speaking at a press briefing‚ ANC provincial secretary Super Zuma made the announcement following a provincial working committee meeting on Monday evening."The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has received‚ considered and accepted the resignation of comrade Senzo Mchunu...this decision by comrade Mchunu followed a detailed assessment of the state of governance in the province and extensive consultation with the NEC‚" said Zuma.ANC chair Sihle Zikalala said the party was in the process of assessing cadres deployed in government."The PEC finalised this matter‚ took it to the NEC because it deals with the matters of premier appointments. The matter then went to the national working committee for approval and the PEC was then asked to implement it‚" said Zikalala.Mchunu's official resignation letter surfaced ahead of the press briefing on Monday night in which the former premier said he wanted to clear the air over the rumours and speculation from "sources".In the letter‚ he confirmed that the meeting with provincial ANC leadership on Friday - rumours of which fuelled speculation that he had been axed - lead to his resignation.Mchunu said statements about his absence at President Jacob Zuma's national prayer day in Durban were untrue and he denied that neither he nor his family made any statement or demand regarding the way his resignation was handled. However‚ he confirmed raising his reservations about the role of head office in the management of his departure with the provincial secretary general.Mchunu said there were three main issues during Friday's meeting - including six accusations that were levelled against him by provincial leadership‚ the issue of resigning by Monday and being redeployed and a request for him to co-operate with leadership.He said he contacted national secretary general Gwede Mantashe on Saturday to confer about "what was unfolding" as he wanted to clarify certain issues and to ensure they were in accordance with ANC internal processes.
