Police are investigating the circumstances around a collision between a woman driver and President Jacob Zuma's blue light convoy near Umhlanga in Durban.

Crisis Medical Paramedics said the head-on collision took place on the M4 northbound freeway just before 7pm on Tuesday evening.

Zuma was in Durban for the launch of Toyota's new manufacturing plant the latest Hilux and Fortuner models.

A statement released by the office of acting national police commissioner Khomotso Phahlane's office said: "A police officer attached to the Presidential Protection Services and a civilian woman were injured in an accident which occurred last night at about 18:30 on the M4 in Kwazulu-Natal."

According to the statement‚ the presidential convoy was travelling towards King Shaka International Airport "when a woman travelling in the opposite direction collided with the lead vehicle of the convoy". "Three other members only sustained minor injuries while the 37-year-old sergeant and the woman were transported to hospital for treatment.

"The management of the SAPS and the Presidency wishes both the police officer and the injured woman a speedy recovery."

The woman motorist is believed to be 28 years old.

Zuma and cars have been in the news three times this week - the accident‚ the opening of the car plant and the admission on Tuesday that 10 vehicles worth a total of about R9 million were bought for Zuma’s wives between 2013 and 2016 using the budget of the police department.

Democratic Alliance MP Zakhele Mbhele said the funds could instead have been used to hire an additional 61 police officers for a year.

By contrast‚ British prime minister David Cameron has just bought a vehicle for his wife Samantha – a second hand‚ blue Nissan Micra that cost £1‚495 – about R34‚200.
