Herman Mashaba wants to be the new broom that sweeps clean. On Monday‚ the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) hopeful for Johannesburg’s mayorship will announce his plans to end a “toxic relationship” which has left “our streets filthy and endangering the health of residents”.Mashaba will‚ in the Banakekeleni informal settlement‚ “share his plans on ending Pikitup’s monopoly on refuse collection in the city”. “Historically‚ Pikitup has been one of the worst run entities in the City of Johannesburg due to poor management and a lack of proper oversight. Pikitup is plagued with persistent problems which have resulted in it failing to keep our city clean‚” a party statement said.A five-week strike earlier this year left the streets of Johannesburg piled with rubbish‚ sparking fears of disease after Pikitup’s 4000 employees had demanded a salary increase and for managing director Amanda Nair to be relieved of her position.“The upper management of the entity has a toxic relationship with its employees which has resulted in protracted strikes over the years‚ leaving our streets filthy and endangering the health of residents‚” the DA statement said. “Pikitup‚ as the only waste removal entity of the City of Johannesburg‚ has monopolised rubbish collection‚ something that a DA administration will change.” ..
