An Economic Freedom Fighters student activist‚ Naledi Chirwa‚ has become the latest student to be arrested by police following a wave of violent Fees Must Fall protests around the country.
The student leader was arrested on Wednesday morning at her home and later released at the Pretoria Magistrate's court on R1‚000 bail.
Chirwa is a 23-year-old student activist who is originally from Mamelodi‚ northeast of Pretoria but currently resides in Hatfield.
The student activist first made headlines on August 6 when she and three other activists staged a silent protest during President Jacob Zuma’s speech at the Independent Electoral Commission results centre in Pretoria shortly after the local government elections. They held posters bearing words such as "remember Khwezi"‚ "I am 1 in 3" and "10 yrz later" in support of a woman dubbed Khwezi‚ who accused Zuma of raping her ten years ago.
The student activist has been instrumental in Fees Must Fall campaigns at the University of Pretoria where students have joined the nationwide campaign against increasing university fees.
Chirwa is a member of the Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command.
She is currently studying drama at the University of Pretoria but remains suspended on campus as part of her bail conditions.
Chirwa is a mother of one.
She is charged with contravening the Fees Must Fall court order at the University of Pretoria and she will be back in court in January.
