Western Cape ANC doesn't take leader assaulting staff seriously: DA

The Western Cape DA on Tuesday criticised the ANC for lifting the suspension of its provincial secretary while he is still facing an assault charge.

Faiez Jacobs was placed on precautionary suspension in December after allegedly beating up researcher Wesley Seale for failing to write a report on the organisation.

On Tuesday, Jacobs went back to work after the ANC's national disciplinary committee of appeals upheld his appeal against what he claimed was an unprocedural suspension.

"This finding sets a terrible example for South Africa and undermines the fight against violence and abuse in our society," DA Western Cape deputy leader Bonginkosi Madikizela said in in a statement.

He said there was clear, photographic evidence of the attack, and criminal charges were laid against Jacobs. A picture posted on Facebook showed a trail of blood running along the side of Seale's head.

"It is clear the Western Cape ANC does not take this matter seriously. If they did, Mr Jacobs’ suspension would have been properly handled until this matter was concluded and the court makes a ruling," Madikizela said.

He called on the ANC's national office to intervene and call Jacobs to order.
