President Jacob Zuma has urged the nation to keep the families of three mineworkers who are trapped at the Lily mine in Barberton in Mpumalanga in their prayers and thoughts.

The mineworkers have been trapped since Friday when a mine pillar holding up a shaft collapsed.

The three trapped workers‚ Yvonne Mnisi‚ Pretty Mabuza and Solomon Nyarenda‚ were in a lamp room that was housed in a container‚ near the entrance to the mine‚ when the central pillar of ore‚ called a crown pillar‚ collapsed‚ causing the container to fall into a giant sinkhole.

Seventy-six miners were rescued from the mine.

“This is a very difficult period for the affected families as they wait and pray for their loved ones to be found in good health. Let us keep them in our thoughts and prayers. We wish the rescue teams all the strength and wisdom possible as they execute their difficult task‚” President Zuma said on Monday evening.
