The Congress of the People has called for Hawks boss Major General Berning Ntlemeza to be charged with sabotage.

This after ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe accused the Hawks of sabotage after the unit sent questions to Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan four days before his Budget speech.

“Now, in the middle of that hard work, [the Hawks] send questions... to the minister four days before the Budget. From where I sit... I see that as sabotaging and actually deflecting the focus of the minister on what his task at hand is,” Mantashe told ANN7 during an interview.

Cope spokesperson Dennis Bloem said they concurred with Mantashe.

“Tom Moyane of SARS is openly defying and disrespecting Minister Gordhan because he belongs to a faction with a different agenda. The action of the Hawks is not a coincidence. It was well planned. That is the horror of it,” Bloem said.

He said the matter should not be taken lightly as it might have led to a serious crisis if Gordhan had succumbed to pressure.

The Hawks asked Gordhan to answer three pages of questions, keep the letter confidential and not interfere with “state witnesses”, he said.

They did not indicate who the witnesses were.

"I believe this was meant to intimidate and distract us from the work that we had to do to prepare the 2016 Budget."
