A high profile government official and his driver were injured in an accident on the N12 near Fochville on Friday night, paramedics said.

The government official was driving with a convoy which included several law enforcement vehicles when a truck allegedly veered into their lane, said ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak.

"The driver of the SUV explained that he swerved in order to avoid a head on collision and the truck collided with the side of the SUV sending it off the road into a veld next to the road," Vermaak said.

"The impact ripped one of the SUV's rear doors off."

Both the government official and his driver escaped with moderate injuries.

They were treated on scene before being transported to hospital.

It is believed that the driver of the truck were questioned on the scene.

It was not immediately clear what had led to the crash.
