Millions still not registered to vote: IEC

06 April 2016 - 16:17 By Mzwandile Faniso

There are at least 8-million eligible voters who are currently not registered to vote in the coming local government elections‚ and 80% of them are younger than 30 years‚ and some first-time voters. This is according to Mosotho Moepya‚ the chief electoral officer‚ who addressed the media in Centurion near Pretoria on Wednesday in a last-ditch effort by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to have eligible voters registered this weekend‚ Saturday and Sunday. This year’s local government elections are expected to be the most hotly contested in the country’s history after the Democratic Alliance increased its electoral support to 22.2% in the 2014 national general election‚ and the new child on the block‚ the economic Freedom Fighters‚ captured 6.35% of the votes. These figures are expected to reflect in local government elections which have been dominated by the ANC since 1994. Scandals associated with President Jacob Zuma and the recent Constitutional Court ruling that found he had failed to uphold the constitution and breached his oath of office are also expected to reduce the ANC’s electoral support.Currently‚ there are 25.6-million registered voters‚ which is only 75% of the eligible voting population‚ a statement from the commission said. The commission registered 3-million voters at the special registration weekend last moth and hopes that similar numbers will visit its 22‚617 voting stations this weekend. The commission made a special plea to existing voters to visit their voting stations to update and confirm their address details‚ adding that it is a criminal offence to knowingly register in a voting district in which they do not reside. The Constitutional Court found in November last year that voters’ addresses and particulars of place of residence were very important to ensure that they were registered in the correct voting district. The IEC has started initiatives to update and confirm voters’ details. This includes being able to SMS your ID number to 32810 at a cost of R1 to check if additional address information is required. You then receive an SMS back with the name of the voting station where you are currently registered.Voters can also call an IEC Call Centre on 0800 11 8000 between 7am and 9pm or dial *120*432# or use the Voting Station finder app on www.elections.org.za. The Department of Home Affairs will also open its offices over the weekend between 8am and 5pm to allow voters to collect their IDs or obtain temporary ID certificates to help them register to vote.TMG Digital..
