The Congress of the People (Cope) on Tuesday joined the chorus of condemnation of “the ugly racist rant of Matthew Theunissen”. “It is inconceivable that a very highly educated young man should be so inwardly ignorant‚ perverted and repulsive‚” the party’s Dennis Bloem said. “Instead of contributing to the building of a post-apartheid inclusive and caring society‚ he continues to reflect the underbelly of a remnant of society where people despise their fellow human beings because of their skin colour. This is so regressive.”Human Rights Commission asked to probe racist Facebook rantThe South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) was on Tuesday “called on…to probe hate speech” after a racist Facebook rant‚ that included the k-word‚ “sparked anger on social media platforms”. Theunissen sparked online outrage when he took aim at Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula’s suspension of the privileges of federations from bidding for international sporting events when he posted: “So no more sporting events for South Africa.. I've never been more proud than to say our government are a bunch of K*****S.. yes I said it so go f*** yourselves you black f***ing c***s.”Bloem claimed that “science has proven that every human being on earth‚ without exception‚ is descended of an African mother” and opined that “someone with a double master’s degree should therefore know better and should manifest superior logic and thinking”.“Racists in our society are making anti-racism legislation inevitable‚” he continued.“Instead of our voluntarily shunning racism‚ legal censures will soon have to (be) obtain(ed) to castigate racists. This is so disgraceful and an unnecessary burdening of the statute book.”Earlier on Tuesday‚ the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) appeared to support hate speech regulation‚ and said Theunissen “ought to be registered in the National Register of Racist Offenders that Sanco has proposed should be established as part of tightening legislation against racism”.Sanco’s Jabu Mahlangu said this comment showed that "vile racist indoctrination has sown seeds of hatred that have blurred in certain section of our youth the vision of a united‚ non-racial‚ non-sexist‚ democratic South Africa”.He called on the South African Human Rights Commission “to probe hate speech” following Theunissen’s post. The hashtag #MatthewTheunissen continued to trend on Twitter on Tuesday morning‚ with most users condemning his rant...
