The Democratic Alliance has welcomed the announcement on Monday afternoon that Eastern Cape MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Fikile Xasa has agreed to the DA's request to investigate the appointment of Linda Mti as security chief for Nelson Mandela Bay. “The agreement by MEC Xasa to investigate Mti‚ confirms the DA's suspicion that Linda Mti’s appointment is irregular and unprocedural and may be illegal because he is a convicted criminal‚” said Athol Trollip‚ the DA’s mayoral candidate for Nelson Mandela Bay in the coming local government elections.Mti‚ a former commissioner of correctional services‚ who was recently appointed as head of head of safety and security for the Nelson Mandela Bay metro by mayor Danny Jordaan‚ was found guilty of drunk and negligent driving in 2008 and has also been implicated in alleged tender fraud and corruption involving around R1.5 billion by the Special Investigating Unit.“Under Danny Jordaan the NMB government is ignoring the Municipal Systems Act‚ which is a violation of the law‚” Trollip asserted. He said that until the MEC’s investigation was completed‚ Mti should be suspended.“Mti cannot serve in high office‚ overseeing safety and security across the Metro‚ while his appointment is so clearly irregular and unprocedural‚ and is now the subject of a government investigation. “I have now written to Mayor Danny Jordaan‚ and Acting Municipal Manager‚ Johann Mettler‚ giving them reasons to immediately suspend Mti.”..
