In accepting this responsibility‚ we commit to work with our people‚ opposition parties‚ government‚ business and civil society to realise the vision of our great city: to be the most caring and liveable city in Africa by 2020." She said that she aimed to build on the good work that had been done by previous councils. "This occasion takes place during a month where the country celebrates 20 000 women who protested against Pass Laws by marching to Union Buildings. Today‚ Mr Speaker‚ I just want to say that we can assure you that we have the same strength that was shown by these women 60 years ago."Our task... is to consolidate and accelerate what has already been achieved. We must reach for new heights and raise the bar through interventions that will change the city for the better. We cannot live on past achievements. We must get the basics right."Our streets must be clean‚ roads must be without potholes‚ waste must be collected weekly‚ street lamps must work‚ houses and businesses must have reliable power supply. Health and safety‚ and water and sanitation‚ are also on our list of priorities‚" she said...
