Overwatch, Blizzard Entertainments first new franchise in 17 years, is opening for beta play in early 2015, meaning that players around the world will test run the game and submit requests for tweaks and fixes.

The 6v6 first person shooter introduces an international task force of quirky heroes that include soldiers, assassins, robots and an armoured genius gorilla called Winston.

They battle in iconic world venues like the Egyptian Pyramids and the streets of London.

The guardians restored liberty to the earth and stopped an impending war, but now face a resurgence of evil bandits.

Character examples are the Tracer, who can blink, drops bombs and travel back in time.

The Reaper, who uses shadows to move quickly into battle and is armed with hellfire shotguns. Hanzo the bowman who summons dragons to consume his enemies, and the Widowmaker who is a deadly sniper.
