A Victor Khanye municipal official, featured prominently on the ANC's list of candidates for the local government elections, appears in court today on a rape charge.

Mpumalanga police spokesman Leonard Hlathi confirmed that a 32-year-old man was arrested yesterday by Delmas police on rape charges. He will appear in the Delmas Magistrate's Court today.

The complainant - who previously had a relationship with the man and had a child by him - alleges that he visited her on Saturday, was drunk and demanded to see the child.

An argument ensued and, the woman said, the man raped her.
