Portugal's Ricardo Santos took advantage of a calm day at East London Golf Club to post a nine-under-par 62 to lead the first round of the Africa Open.

Santos did not drop a single shot on the par-71 layout as he built a two-stroke lead over South African Garth Mulroy, Danish rookie Lucas Bjerregaard, Welshman Rhys Davies and England's Richard Bland.

Bjerregaard finds himself in good company in South Africa following the recent triumphs of his countrymen Thomas Bjørn in the Nedbank Golf Challenge and Morten Ørum Madsen in the South African Open.

But it was Santos's putter that gave him the edge over the field.
