Matthew Booth is hanging up his boots after 18 years as a professional footballer.

Booth, 37, made 16 starts for Wits last season and was offered an extension by the club.

But he has opted to bow out after a relatively successful campaign during which the Students finished third in the Absa Premiership and reached the final of the Nedbank Cup.

"I thought our last campaign was a decent season and a good note to bow out on," the centre back told The Times.

"I felt I contributed. But I also sat on the bench more often than I've ever done, and that has contributed to my decision.

"People don't have the greatest memories, so I think it's important to leave at the right time."

He made his debut for Cape Town Spurs in 1996
