Tommy Gun can rock with Jay Z

American hip hop artist Jay Z looks set to hand Thomas ''Tommy Gun" Oosthuizen the biggest pay cheque of his career if the South African boxer is able to take advantage of a palatable offer put before him. The super-rich rapper from Brooklyn, real name Shawn Corey Carter, has become a boxing promoter and has set his sights on getting Oosthuizen to face his boxer - World Boxing Association (WBA) super-middleweight champion Andre Ward - in a fight expected to take place in the US in May or June.Oosthuizen's promoter Rodney Berman told the Sunday Times in an exclusive interview that the rapper's Roc Nations Sports phoned from the US this week enquiring about Oosthuizen's availability to face Ward.''I immediately called trainer Harold Volbrecht and broke the news to him, telling him that Jay Z wants Tommy to fight Andre Ward," said the promoter, who has staged super bouts in and outside of SA for over 30 years.''I also made it clear that the fight will be in the super-middleweight division. Harold told me that Thomas still makes the super-middleweight limit without difficulty. Thomas could earn a record R3-million for that fight. I know I can push for him to earn that amount."But Oosthuizen still has one final hurdle to negotiate if he is to mingle with Jay Z and his wife Beyoncé in the US in May. He has to beat compatriot Ryno ''The Lion" Liebenberg in a fight for the vacant International Boxing Organisation light-heavyweight belt at Emperors Palace on Saturday night. This bout will headline a box-and- dine tournament dubbed Stand and Deliver.Liebenberg is no slouch and may prove a party pooper.Volbrecht insisted yesterday that his boxer was well aware of what was at stake and there had been a massive change in outlook since Oosthuizen was told about the phone call from Jay Z's company. ''He has been training like a Trojan since that call because he knows what is on the table," Volbrecht said.Oosthuizen's career appeared to be going nowhere fast and this unexpected lifeline from the 19-time Grammy Award winner who, according to Forbes Magazine, has an estimated net worth of over $560-million, came out of the blue. With Jay Z and Beyoncé's combined net worth at an estimated $1-billion, the businessman, rapper and sometime actor should have no difficulty meeting the payday envisaged by Berman.Ward has not fought since 2013 as he was involved in a contractual dispute with previous partners Goossen Promotions. Roc Nation Sports negotiated a way out for him and the gold medallist at the 2004 Olympics then signed.Jay Z has just reached an agreement with cable network Fox Sports on a three-event live boxing package to be broadcast exclusively on Fox Sports 1.Oosthuizen is expected to appear on the same platform if he keeps his end of the bargain...
