'Crazy' Bok coach sticks to stalwarts despite calls to play fringe players

Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer on Wednesday described himself as "totally mad" when he named the team to face Argentina in the World Cup third-fourth place playoff tomorrow. And many people would agree after he seemed to misjudge the mood of the country by selecting the ageing stalwarts he has kept faith in, instead of taking a chance on fringe members of the squad.Meyer resisted pressure to make changes to the team that lost 20-18 to the All Blacks in last weekend's semifinal, claiming he wanted continuity in a must-win game.Lock Victor Matfield will captain what will be the 38-year-old's last Test, with Lood de Jager dropping to the bench.Scrumhalf Ruan Pienaar will start, with Rudy Paige coming on the bench as Fourie du Preez has been ruled out.Social media erupted when the team was announced because Meyer had overlooked fringe players, but he decided this was his best team for the challenge."This is an important game and one we have to win and also one in which we have to put up a good performance," Meyer said."Some of the fringe players haven't played for weeks."The squad were given two days' off and only had one training session on Wednesday as they continued to come to terms with the narrow semifinal loss.Meyer shouldered the blame for the defeat and seemed genuinely surprised by messages of support."I've had people coming up to me and asking for my signature and I ask myself: 'Why do they want it?' I've just cost the country the World Cup," Meyer said."You have to love people and be crazy for this job and I'm totally crazy, I'm a nutter."Springbok squad:15 Willie le Roux, 14 JP Pietersen, 13 Jesse Kriel, 12 Damian de Allende, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Handré Pollard, 9 Ruan Pienaar, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Schalk Burger, 6 Francois Louw, 5 Victor Matfield (capt), 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Frans Malherbe, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Tendai Mtawarira.Reserves: 16 Adriaan Strauss, 17 Trevor Nyakane, 18 Jannie du Plessis, 19 Lood de Jager, 20 Willem Alberts, 21 Rudy Paige, 22 Pat Lambie, 23 Jan Serfontein..
