At 38, Ndlovu aims for another world title

WBA Pan African and WBF international featherweight champion Takalani "The Panther" Ndlovu celebrated his 38th birthday on Monday - an age when most boxers are over the hill. Even the legendary Sugar Ray Leonard, arguably the sport's best practitioner and a man possessed with lightning reflexes, retired at 38 in 1997.Although still supremely fit, his eyesight and skill had declined to a point where he was knocked down twice by upstart Terry Norris."If you get hit by punches that would not have even forced you to parry them before, then it is certainly time to quit," said the man whose only previous loss was to tough-as-teak Roberto "Hands of Stone" Duran in 1980.Ndlovu - who spent the whole of last year hoping for a fight - has rejoined trainer Nick Durandt and is optimistic they can still produce some magic, which saw them win the WBF belt in 2009.Ndlovu had his first training session at Durandt's establish-ment on Monday."I realised that he is the only trainer to go to at this time of my career. He is very good at what he does and hopefully we will still make things happen together," said Ndlovu, who parted ways with trainer Harry Ramogoadi.Said Durandt: "Takalani is no spring chicken at 38 years old. But he reminds me of Thulani 'Sugar Boy' Malinga, who at 42 won the biggest prize in boxing - the WBC belt - from defending super middleweight champion Nigel Benn in 1996. So don't be surprised if we add another world title to Takalani's collection. The beauty is that he is a gentleman, lives a clean life and is a committed family man." ..
