Chad Le Clos will find out today just how fast he might have to go if he wants to keep his 200m butterfly Olympic gold at the Rio Games in August. Michael Phelps‚ who was dethroned by the South African by five-hundredths of a second in London four years ago‚ is expected to be in the final of this event at the US swimming trials tonight. The American posted the world’s fastest time last year‚ a 1min 52.94‚ but already Hungarian Laszlo Cseh‚ the reigning world champion‚ went even quicker earlier this year‚ doing 1:52.91.Le Clos is yet to go quicker than the 1:52.96 he achieved for his Olympic gold.At the 2012 trials Phelps went 1:53.65.Two Americans bumped SA’s other Olympic champion‚ Cameron van der Burgh‚ down two places to ninth on the world world rankings.Kevin Cordes rocketed to second behind Britain’s Adam Peaty when he went 58.92sec and Cody Miller 59.09 in the semifinals. They both went slower in the final‚ although both those times were still quicker than Van der Burgh’s season’s best 59.61.The veteran‚ with a lifetime best of 58.46‚ places little value on rankings‚ especially early in the season‚ preferring to do his best at championship galas. He was ranked fifth going into the London Games‚ where none of the world’s top three-ranked swimmers made the podium.Going into the 2012 showpiece Le Clos was ranked seventh in the 200m butterfly and 35th in the 100m fly‚ where he ended up sharing the silver medal. - TMG Digital..
