Sharks must overcome nemesis Cheetahs to boost quarterfinal hopes

08 July 2016 - 10:06 By KHANYISO TSHWAKU

Sharks director of rugby Gary Gold is within inches of a Super rugby quarterfinal spot - and a win against the Cheetahs in Durban tomorrow night should seal it. The Sharks are three points ahead of the Bulls, who host the Sunwolves at Loftus Versfeld.Gold should be jumping through the roof, but the Cheetahs have prove d to be the banana skin that the Sharks have slipped on in almost every campaign.Last year Cheetahs won the season-opening game 35-29.Gold wants his team to stick to what they do best - and so keep the Cheetahs on a leash."You have to concentrate on yourself but one of the things that let us down was our defence against the Lions. The source of the tries were the errors we made and there were patches of our defensive phases that let us down."We've worked hard on that this week but the Cheetahs are a hard team to prepare against and they're a full package. We need to show them all the respect," Gold said."It's dangerous to be worrying about the Bulls because what they do is of no consequence to us. If we're playing against them, then it's a different story."Gold made three changes to the side the Lions pummelled at Ellis Park. Andre Esterhuizen has shaken off his hamstring strain to start at 12 while Varsity Cup star Rhyno Smith replaces Odwa Ndungane.Coenie Oosthuizen rotates with Lourens Adriaanse at tighthead prop; but the biggest selection surprise is that of Under-20 star Curwin Bosch on the bench. The World Junior Championship player of the year can slot in at flyhalf or fullback, giving Gold much needed versatility."We believe he's prodigious talent and I believe if you're good enough, you're old enough," Gold said. The Sharks also announced that star centre Paul Jordaan and hooker Kyle Cooper will leave the union. Jordaan, who came close to Springbok selection in 2013 and was one of the better performers for the union this year, will join French Top 14 club La Rochelle.Cooper, who has played 99 times for the Sharks in both Super rugby and Currie Cup, will move to England to play for the Newcastle Falcons. The Sharks have suffered severe player defections in the past year with Boks Jannie and Bismarck du Plessis and Willem Alberts leaving.Additional reporting by TMG Digital..
