West Indies went to tea at 236-3 at Warner Park after starting the day at 86-1.

The hosts were lifted by earlier half centuries from captain Chris Gayle (50) and Narsingh Deonarine (65). Once they both departed either side of lunch, Chanderpaul and Brendan Nash shared an unbroken fourth wicket stand of 85.

The 35-year-old Chanderpaul struck six fours off 125 balls while Nash supplied an unbeaten 44, with five fours off 69 deliveries.

Morne Morkel, who dismissed Gayle in the morning session, led South Africa with 2-59.

Dale Steyn bowled Deonarine soon after lunch as the left-hander dragged an expansive back foot drive onto his stumps with the West Indies total at 151. Deonarine hit five fours and a six off 131 balls.

South Africa won the first test by 163 runs.
