“When the players arrive at the stadium, they will all donate to Operation Hydrate. We call on all fans to join us and donate water to a very worthy cause,” Cricket South Africa spokesperson, Altaaf Kazi, said on Sunday.

Operation Hydrate had thus far distributed 6.1 million litres. A total of 1.5 million litres were delivered to four provinces over the weekend.

Forty-one trucks and tankers delivered water to Swartruggens, Senekal, Steynsrus, Qwa Qwa, Zululand, Nongoma, Ulundi, Paulpietersburg, Vryheid, and Aliwal North.

The initiative’s co-ordinator, Yusuf Abramjee, said there were scenes of jubilation and long queues formed wherever the water was delivered. The organisation was working with government to identify areas in need of water.

The search for long-term solutions, such as drilling boreholes, were at an advanced stage, he said.
