The Sharks have signed Frederic Michalak as cover for their troubled scrumhalf position with the Frenchman expected to go straight into the match 22 for Saturday’s Super 15 clash against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.

Details of the deal have not been stipulated by the Durban franchise, but the 28-year-old will now compete with Charl McLeod for the number nine jersey after Conrad Hoffman, the other first-team player, was ruled out for the rest of the season with an elbow injury.

Michalak, who plays for Toulouse in his homeland, was previously on the Sharks books, when he was part of the Currie Cup-winning team in 2008.

“It is no surprise that I am here again,” he said. “I loved my year that I spent in Durban and the cherry on the top was definitely winning the Currie Cup trophy.

“Unlike the first time when I signed for The Sharks, there won’t be a problem in terms of any language barrier and being able to slot in with old teammates is definitely a plus factor for me.”

Coach John Plumtree added: “It is great to have him back and be available to us for selection from this weekend. His arrival could not have been timed better.”
