Goosen set to claim fullback berth from Le Roux

Johan Goosen is the front-runner to take over the Springbok No15 jersey from Willie le Roux in the Rugby Championship. When the Boks take on Argentina in the opening test of the southern hemisphere international competition‚ the side will be fielding a new fullback after Le Roux‚ who featured at the back during the mid-year tests against Ireland‚ was released to go ply his trade overseas.Le Roux’s departure leaves a vacancy and Goosen‚ Jesse Kriel and Ruan Combrinck will compete for the position.“Willie le Roux did a great job for our country. He was always there giving his best‚” Boks backline coach Mzwandile Stick said on Thursday.“Looking at the challenges that we faced against the Irish side in June‚ our three kickers were all left-footed. We struggled when we had to exit because our opponents knew we struggled with no right-footed kicker and that put us under pressure.”Stick hinted that Goosen would be the answer to head coach Allister Coetzee’s fullback worries. The 24-year-old‚ who plies his trade for French side Racing Metro‚ rejoined the Boks team this week ahead of the start of the Rugby Championship.Goosen is set to make his first appearance in the green and gold since 2014 to add to his current six Tests.“Looking at the way Johan Goosen has been playing in France‚ and we know what a dangerous player he is‚ and he has a good right foot. I think the coach went with Goosen because he can solve those problems and give us options‚” Stick explained.“Jesse Kriel is someone who can give us back-up there. Ruan Combrinck has also played in the position before. For now we don’t want to change too much in our backline.”While Combrinck‚ who went all the way to the Super Rugby final with the Lions‚ has often slotted in at fullback with great success for the Lions and can also kick with both feet‚ the Bok management do not want to put unnecessary pressure on the winger who has played only two tests.“We want Combrinck to focus on being a wing‚” said Stick.“He has been doing well. He had a huge impact when he came in the second test and also had a great game in the third test. He’s only played two tests‚ so we don’t want to give him too much or move him around.“We will look at Johan Goosen or Jesse Kriel.”..
