Bok coach Coetzee looking for more ‘told you so’‚ less ‘phew’

Though the test series against Ireland was won 2-1‚ Springbok coach Allister Coetzee knows the preservation of the status quo won’t do in the Rugby Championships. “Phew”‚ more than “told you so” was the overriding sentiment following that series and Coetzee knows amendments will have to be made. With that in mind he may make as many as five changes to his squad to take on Argentina at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit‚ Mpumalanga‚ on Saturday. Of course generating optimum performance is at the core of the desired change but other factors are at play too. With Willie le Roux unavailable‚ Johan Goosen could return from his international hiatus by taking up position in the last line of defence. It is not a position that comes naturally to him but Goosen’s gifts allow him to go places. On the left wing Bryan Habana’s flirtation with Sevens is at an end‚ which means he can slot back into the left wing position. Many have questioned Coetzee’s loyalty to the experience of Habana and that of the absent JP Pietersen but they do come a long way.Faf de Klerk‚ Elton Jantjies‚ Damian de Allende‚ Lionel Mapoe and Ruan Combrinck are likely to complete the back division.Among the forwards another recent absentee‚ Oupa Mohoje‚ will hope to rekindle his test career with a possible starting berth at blindside flank. His form hasn’t been blinding but its better than what it was.At lock‚ and this would be a mild surprise‚ Coetzee may opt for Lood de Jager ahead of Pieter-Steph du Toit.De Jager's season hasn’t lived up to his billing as South Africa’s most recent player of the year. In fact‚ it has been underwhelming and the disquiet around his game was rather amplified when it was announced that he would be transferring from the Cheetahs to the Bulls on a one-year deal next season.Franco Smith‚ his coach at the Cheetahs‚ was keen for the lumbering lock to assume greater responsibility and he was tasked with running the team’s line-out.By the time the Stormers departed Bloemfontein following their 20-10 Super Rugby win earlier this season De Jager’s reputation had taken a pounding at the spoiling hand of Eben Etzebeth.Injury did not help either but the biggest knock the Cheetahs took was the announcement that De Jager was to leave for the Bulls at the end of the season. He missed the Cheetahs' last three matches in Super Rugby but Coetzee gave him a glowing endorsement earlier this week.“Lood has come back in the best condition I've seen him‚” said Coetzee at the start of the week. That is reassuring for De Jager can be an irresistible force when in full command of his game. The one already confirmed change is at tighthead prop where Julian Redelinghuys‚ the Lions’ scrumming dynamo of the last few seasons‚ will pack down in the absence of Frans Malherbe.Warren Whiteley‚ Francois Louw‚ Eben Etzebeth‚ Adriaan Strauss and Tendai Mtawarira will complete the pack.On the bench Coetzee is also faced with a few interesting choices. Malcolm Marx is the man of the moment but can the coach afford to leave Bongi Mbonambi out of his match-day squad? Mbonambi hasn’t done much wrong but Marx has done a lot right. As for the rest of the bench Coetzee will have to decide how he wants to divide the labour. With loose forward Sikhumbuzo Notshe and wing Lwazi Mvovo sent home the bench is likely to include Mbonambi‚ Steven Kitshoff‚ Vincent Koch‚ Du Toit‚ Jaco Kriel‚ Rudy Paige‚ Juan de Jongh‚ Jesse Kriel.TMG Digital/TMG Sport..
