50-cap Stormers grafter Rynhardt Elstadt type of player every team needs

08 July 2016 - 12:25 By Craig Ray

There was a time that one of the first names current Springbok coach Allister Coetzee put on his team sheet when he was Stormers coach was that of Rynhardt Elstadt. The bruising utility forward is a huge physical presence and at his best had the same impact on the Stormers as Danie Rossouw did for the Bulls. Every team needs one.The ability to play the enforcing No 4 lock role as well as being able to do the ball-carrying blindside flank job‚ makes him a huge factor in games.Injuries have curbed Elstadt’s development and his chance of playing for the Springboks has probably passed him by‚ yet he is still a man who teammates look to for inspiration. Elstadt will earn his 50th Super Rugby cap against the Force on Saturday‚ and had it not been for a litany of injuries he might well have an additional 25 caps. But every time he has been knocked back‚ like earlier this year when he tore his groin against the Jaguares in a Super Rugby warm-up match‚ Elstadt has bounced back.“Rynhardt is a great team man‚ and the fact that he is earning his 50th cap on Saturday despite the injury setbacks he has had shows the sort of determined player he is‚" Stormers coach Robbie Fleck said from Perth. In 2011‚ Elstadt started 15 games for the Stormers at No 4 lock and was in the reckoning for Springbok selection. He couldn’t break in with Bakkies Botha and Danie Rossouw in the frame as well. He was overlooked and his Bok dream stalled. And ever since it’s been a case of one step forward and two steps back for the versatile enforcer. He missed most of 2014 and 2015 with bad knee injuries‚ playing just four games in two seasons. In an interview earlier this year‚ Elstadt said he was determined to get back to the heights that put him on the Springbok radar. He showed his commitment to both the Stormers and his dream of playing for the Boks‚ by signing on for a further two years.“Hopefully injuries are a thing of the past‚” Elstadt said. “But you never ask for them in rugby‚ they arrive like a thief in the night. I just hope I can complete the season.“The Stormers have been very loyal to me and I decided not to go overseas because I felt I owed them something for that loyalty. So I’ve signed on for another two years. “I’ve been in many campaigns and a few semifinals but this year we have a young team playing fearless rugby. There is a lot of excitement in the group. It’s a nice challenge for me to see the youngsters coming through.“Playing lock is where I had my most success but a lot of injuries have set me back and it’s been hard to reach that level (of 2011) again‚” Elstadt said. “I’m trying to get back there and then take it further.“I definitely want to knock on the Springbok door again‚ but I first have to play some rugby for the Stormers.”- TMG Sport..
