Super Rugby quarterfinal lineup complete after Saturday's matches

17 July 2016 - 12:12 By Craig Ray

A second-string Lions team failed to gain a point against the Jaguares in Argentina late on Saturday night meaning they finished as second seeds on the overall Super Rugby standings.New Zealand’s Hurricanes go into the quarterfinals as top seeds after winning the high quality NZ conference while the Lions won Africa 2 and the Stormers won Africa 1 to end as second and third seeds respectively. The Brumbies topped the Australia conference and are the overall fourth seeds. The Highlanders‚ Chiefs and Crusaders from NZ and the Sharks from South Africa complete the quarterfinal picture as wild cards on the controversial conference system. In next Saturday’s quarterfinals the Hurricanes (1) will host the Sharks (8)‚ the Lions (2) will play the Crusaders (7) at Ellis Park and the Stormers (3) will welcome the Chiefs (6) at Newlands. On Friday the Brumbies (4) are up against the Highlanders (5).Had the final quarterfinals been decided on log positions then the Brumbies would’ve been seeded seventh and the Stormers fifth with the Highlanders and Chiefs taking third and fourth respectively.Lions coach Johan Ackermann might also rue his decision to leave 20 of his first choice players behind for the assignment in Buenos Aires. Predictably they came up short losing 34-22.Had the Lions gained a point they would have finished top seeds‚ meaning a possible home final if they progressed that far. It would also have meant a last eight against the Sharks and not the dangerous Crusaders‚ who beat the Lions 43-37 at Ellis Park earlier in the year. The Stormers are on new ground having not played against a side from NZ this season due to the tournament structure that saw them come up against Australian sides in cross-conference matches.“There was no preference about which NZ side we faced‚ once it became clear we would be up against one of them‚” Stormers captain Schalk Burger said.“It was out of our hands and now we will prepare for the Chiefs. It’s always a similar challenge against NZ sides but individually they each have subtle differences and we have to study what those are for the Chiefs.“It’s different to other years when you would’ve had a taster against a team from NZ‚ so we have to start from scratch this week.“But even though we will plot ways to put them under pressure it still comes down to how we execute our own game.“It’s a huge challenge but we are all up for this game. We watched the two NZ derbies (on Saturday morning) together as a team and it was spectacular and we just want to be a part of that. It excites us‚ so be in no doubt‚ this group of ours believes that we can compete against them.”Super Rugby quarterfinal draw: Friday‚ July 22: Brumbies [4] v Highlanders [5] - GIO Stadium‚ Canberra (18.00 AEST; 20.00 NZ time; 08.00 GMT) Saturday‚ July 23: Hurricanes [1] v Sharks [8] - Westpac Stadium‚ Wellington (19.35 NZ time; 09.35 SA time; 07.35 GMT) Lions [2] v Crusaders [7] - Ellis Park‚ Johannesburg (16.30 SA time; 14.30 GMT; 02.30‚ Sunday‚ July 24 NZ time) Stormers [3] v Chiefs 6] - Newlands‚ Cape Town (19.00 SA time; 17.00 GMT); 05.00‚ Sunday‚ July 24 NZ time)The semi-final places will be determined by the results of the quarterfinals. The highest seeded winner will play the lowest seeded winner; the second highest seeded winner will play the second lowest seeded winner. The two highest seeds will host semifinal matches. - TMG Digital..
