Crusaders eager to overcome psychological barrier in the Highveld

While the Crusaders remain one of the most successful visiting teams in South Africa‚ they cannot claim the same accomplishment when they play knockout matches in the Highveld. On three different occasions when the Kiwi side played in South Africa in the playoffs‚ incidentally‚ all semifinals against the Bulls – in 2007 and 2009 at Loftus Versfeld and in 2010 at Orlando Stadium – the Crusaders have suffered defeat. On Saturday they take on the high-riding Lions at their Ellis Park fortress.Their record in knockout games in the Highveld should surely be on the back on the New Zealanders' minds when the visitors take to the field. The side is filled with players who have‚ however‚ enjoyed success in Johannesburg with the All Blacks. The visitors will hope to draw strength from this psychological aspect of the game.“I think it’s great that we have players here who have had both success and not a lot of it‚ so we can ask people questions about how they prepared‚” lock Sam Whitelock‚ one of the senior members of both club and country‚ said on Wednesday.“That is good. We can speed up those learnings and hopefully come away with a win.” The New Zealanders are still disappointed with their 10-35 defeat to the Hurricanes last weekend. The side is intent on making a turn-around when they face the Lions on Saturday.“It was disappointing‚ we felt like we were in the game‚” said Whitelock.“We just need to make sure that we take those positives. We have been working on those things in the week making sure that we nail them in the game.”The Crusaders are quite wary of the threat that will be posed by a fiery Lions side‚ especially on their home ground. “Every New Zealand side knows that when they are over here the Lions are going to attack‚ use the ball and probably play a bit more expansive than they would have done traditionally‚” the Crusaders lock said“We just need to be aware of that and ensure that we cover the whole field. The Crusaders team is: Israel Dagg‚ Johnny McNicholl‚ Ryan Crotty‚ David Havili‚ Jone Macilai‚ Richie Mo’unga‚ Andy Ellis‚ Kieran Read‚ Matt Todd‚ Jordan Taufua‚ Sam Whitelock‚ Luke Romano‚ Owen Franks‚ Codie Taylor‚ Wyatt Crockett. Replacements: Ben Funnell‚ Alex Hodgman‚ Mike Alaalatoa‚ Scott Barrett‚ Jimmy Tupou‚ Mitchell Drummond‚ Ben Volavola‚ Kieron Fonotia. - TMG Digital..
