THE PSL has endorsed the implementation of a professional structure for referees.

A pilot project will start next year with 12 referees and 12 assistant referees working in a new structure that will be restricted to people of talent and integrity and will be run by a board independent of control by clubs.

Acting on one of the recommendations made by the Semenya Commission which was sanctioned by Safa to investigate corruption and match fixing in South African football, the PSL executive endorsed the new structure, which will become the model for referee development and professionalism in Africa.

Once the Safa executive approves the structure, a sponsor will be sought and a budget drawn up.

Safa, as football's controlling body in the country, will remain responsible for the training, development and deployment of referees.

World renowned former ref, England's David Elleray, whose goal is to introduce international standards to ensure local referees are honest and professional, will lead the project.

"Once they have been integrated, the referees will talk to clubs, players and coaches to create an open and transparent environment," said Elleray.
