Roger de Sa defended his signing of Mbulelo "Old John" Mabizela, the troubled former Bafana captain.

Mabizela was jus 20 when he captained South Africa - the youngest skipper in Bafana history - but has since earned a reputation for being "difficult".

He was stripped of the captaincy for disciplinary reasons, sacked by Tottenham Hotspur after 14 months at the English Premier League club and incurred a six-month ban in 2006 for using a banned substance. Last season, his contract with Platinum Stars was ended abruptly.

Wits coach De Sa said the club needed Mabizela's experience and quality as a defender.

"I know there have been rumours that he's a handful and a troubled player, but I disagree with that. I think just his ability alone is good for us," said De Sa.

"I think he's got his head screwed on right, and he'll help us a hell of a lot."

Since his break-up with Platinum Stars, Mabizela has been struggling to find a new club at which to resurrect his career. He found one yesterday, signing a two-year contract with Wits, and could make his debut on Sunday against Maritzburg United.

Mabizela had also been linked with possible moves to Supersport United and Ajax Cape Town.

Mabizela is seen as a replacement for Tefu Mashamaite, who left Wits in June to join Kaizer Chiefs.

Mabizela was also welcomed to the club by another new signing, Bradley Ritson.

"It was always tough to play against Mabizela. It's better to have him on my side than against me," said the striker who played for Moroka Swallows last season.

Mabizela is expected to form a solid central defence pairing with Derrick Spencer.
