Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has dismissed Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal as a ‘high-maintenance’ coach with a ‘huge ego’.

“As soon as he presented his autobiography in a snobby restaurant, I knew hard times were ahead,” Rummenigge told Germany’s Spiegel magazine. “Louis van Gaal was not always easy-care. He wanted to ‘Vangaalise’ our club. He has a huge ego.”

Van Gaal, who was sacked by Bayern less than a year after leading the club to a league and cup double and only narrowly missing out on a famous treble when they lost in the Champions League final in 2010 to Inter Milan, left the Allianz Arena under a cloud owing to the apparent way he went about things during his time in Bavaria.

Rummenigge did pay tribute to a “good and successful coach”, but claimed that Guardiola is a much better person to work with.
