Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has offered Barcelona's Pedro Rodriguez a role alongside captain Wayne Rooney and Memphis Depay in a new-look front three at Old Trafford in a bid to convince the Spanish forward to complete a £22m (about R438 million) move to the Premier League giants.

According to the Daily Mail, United are clear to sign Pedro but Barcelona will wait until after the European Super Cup clash with Sevilla before releasing him.

Pedro has a £22m release clause in his contract at the Nou Camp, however, he has been urged to stay at the club by manager Luis Enrique.

The purported move could happen before he start of the Premier League next weekend, according to the report, because the 28-year-old is determined to escape the shadow of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar at Barcelona to secure regular football elsewhere.

The report added that Pedro could make his farewell appearance for the European champions against Roma in the traditional Gamper Trophy season curtain-raiser at the Nou Camp on Wednesday before finalising a transfer to United.
