Former Bafana Bafana coach, Clive Barker, has joined a growing list of many in the football fraternity who are questioning the selection policy of current boss Shakes Mashaba.

After naming his squad on August 20 for the upcoming Group M Afcon qualifier away to Mauritania on Saturday, Mashaba was met with criticism with some accusing him of inconsistent selections.

And it seems Barker, who won the 1996 Afcon on home soil, has entered into the fray after the veteran mentor told Soccer Laduma on Wednesday that Mashaba was preparing a recipe for disaster by picking “strikers who aren’t scoring goals.”

“I think it’s sensible to play your lesser known young players against your Lesotho’s, etcetera. However, if you call your geese swans, in this game you die quickly, hey,” Barker cautioned.

“You’ve got to have players that are hitting the back of the net. Scoring goals is about consistency.”

“If you’re asking me if Shakes is up against it, I’ll say yes, he is now for the first time.”
